Workshop Notes: Maxxis High Roller III – Autumn Setup on the Orange Stage 5
With softer dirt starting to cover the trails, it felt like time to move away from the Schwalbe Nobby Nics and try something a little more sure-footed.
Enter the new Maxxis High Roller III, fitted to my Orange Stage 5, a 140/135mm burly trail bike running 29" wheels.
The wheels were freshly taped and set up tubeless with Muc-Off MTB sealant and new big bore Schrader valves. Tyres went onto 30mm internal width Stan’s Flow rims without fuss — always a good start.
Setup
At Barry Sidings, I ran 18psi front and 21psi rear; for the faster terrain at Surrey Hills, pressures crept up slightly to 20/25psi. Both ends are Double Down carcasses, which feel reassuringly solid — though in hindsight, an EXO+ front might allow a bit more deformation and compliance without sacrificing sidewall support on the rear.
On the Trail
Straight away, grip levels were a big jump over the Nobby Nics. There’s far less sliding under heavy braking and noticeably more confidence at deeper lean angles. They don’t roll as quickly, particularly on flatter sections, but on climbs they never felt draggy or energy-sapping.
The Double Down casing gives a very planted, predictable feel — the kind of feedback you want when things get slick and unpredictable. Combined with the revised tread pattern, braking and cornering traction are excellent, even through wet roots and leaf mulch.
Verdict
The High Roller III feels like a proper UK autumn/winter tyre: loads of grip, strong casing, and reliable performance when the surface turns sketchy. They trade a touch of speed for security, which is a swap I’ll happily take this time of year.
If you’re moving into the wet season and want a tyre that grips rather than guesses, the HRIII is a solid choice. Set them up cleanly, take time on the taping, and they’ll reward you with a confident, sure-footed ride all winter.
