Five Christmas Gifts Cyclists Actually Want
Five Christmas Gifts Cyclists Actually Want
Finding a gift for a cyclist can be tricky. Most riders already have a drawer full of tools they never use or accessories they bought on a whim and forgot about.
So here are five genuinely useful gifts that will make someone’s riding easier, smoother and more enjoyable.
These are all items I use regularly when working on customers’ (and my own) bikes. No hard sell, just solid kit that makes a difference.
1. A Digital Tyre Pressure Gauge
For years, I knew exactly how far my bars were rolled forward, the exact height of my saddle and how much lever pull I liked… but still squeezed my tyres with my fingers before every ride.
A proper digital pressure gauge removes the guesswork. You get repeatable, accurate pressures every time which means better grip, better rolling speed, fewer punctures and a bike that behaves the same on every ride.
What I use: Topeak SmartGauge D2 or Bosch EasyPump
Why it is a great gift: Consistency makes you faster, right?
2. A Good Chain Checker
Chains wear slowly and quietly until the cassette starts paying for it. A simple chain checker tells you when to replace the chain before it becomes an expensive problem.
Most riders mean to check wear but rarely do.
This makes it quick and unmistakable.
What I use: Park Tool CC-4.2 for simple go or no-go accuracy
Why it is a great gift: It prevents a cheap job becoming a costly one.
3. Tyre Levers That Don’t Snap
Cheap levers work fine in the garage and then explode the first time you try to lever off a cold winter tyre. A decent set just makes the whole job far less annoying.
What I use: Crankbrothers Speedier Lever for knuckle protection and that clever slider to pop the final bit of bead over the rim or Park Tool TL-6.3 for stubborn tyres where steel (coated in plastic to protect your rims!) is the only answer
Why it is a great gift: Nobody regrets owning better tyre levers.
4. A Proper Wax Chain Lube
Wax lubes are cleaner, quieter and extend drivetrain life. The catch is the prep.
You need a properly degreased chain for wax to bond well… which means a thorough clean. I know someone who can help with that part, in case you need a hint.
What I use: Smoove Lube (my long-time go-to).
Why it is a great gift: Cleaner drivetrains and smoother pedalling through winter filth.
5. A BikeTune Gift Card
A service is the one thing every cyclist needs but rarely books for themselves. Particularly in winter when bikes suffer the most.
A BikeTune gift card can be used for anything from a safety check to a full rebuild.
It is convenient, mobile and guarantees their bike will start the new year running perfectly.
Why it is a great gift: Zero hassle. Maximum benefit. A tuned bike always feels brand new.
